Medicinal mushrooms, modern remedies with a long tradition

Treatment with medicinal mushrooms (mycotherapy) has a long tradition. This can be seen particularly on the Asian continent. There, the medicinal use of mushrooms has had a firm place in medicine for thousands of years. But we also find evidence of the early use of medicinal mushrooms in Europe, for example in the medical books of the Middle Ages. However, they owe their success in modern medicine not only to their long tradition, but also to the findings of modern research.

The mushroom, a special form of life

Mushrooms as detoxifying organsMushrooms are not plants. They represent a kingdom of their own in nature. Their world is mysterious, and their life is mostly hidden. Most mushrooms are only visible to us when their fruiting body comes into the light of day. The fruiting body is what we usually call a "mushroom". But it is only the tip of the iceberg. The actual mushroom is the so-called mycelium, a network of thread-like runners with which the mushroom permeates its nourishing tissue. In the forest, for example, this is the forest floor or dead wood. Mushrooms are the detoxifying organs of the forest. They dispose of indigestible waste such as dead trees, leaves and needles. They also clear the soil of toxins and heavy metals. We can make use of their detoxifying effect. In the human body, medicinal mushrooms activate the body's own detoxifying organs and thus strengthen its function and vitality. They also contain many vital substances. Some of them act on the immune system by activating or suppressing it. This means they can be used to treat many diseases in which the immune system plays a role.

The use of medicinal mushrooms in chronic diseases

Due to their effects on the immune system, medicinal mushrooms can be helpful in various chronic diseases. Their use is largely free of side effects and they can be taken without any problems in conjunction with conventional medical therapies. They can also complement conventional medical therapies. For example, they are used as part of chemotherapy due to their detoxifying and cell-protecting properties. Medicinal mushrooms are now an integral part of therapy in our practice, not only because of their detoxifying effects, but also because of their immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and performance-enhancing effects.
In Germany, the use of around ten medicinal mushrooms has proven successful. Due to the specific indications known to date, they can be used effectively even in complex clinical pictures. Medicinal mushrooms that are used medically in our practice are tested for their purity and identity.
